The Purpose of the Initiative

As a leading manufacturer of high-quality film scanners, we at DFT are committed to supporting  the preservation of global film heritage. With millions of irreplaceable films at risk of permanent loss, we launched the DFT Film Scanning Initiative to help adress the need for better access to professional and high-quality film scanning technology.

Through this initiative, we support non-commercial digitization projects facing budgetary constraints or limited access to advanced scanning technology. We provide selected projects with professional scanning services free of charge at our facility in Darmstadt, Germany.

Polar HQ: A Solution for Saving At-Risk Film

Many collections include films that are affected by shrinkage, brittleness, warping, or damaged perforations, which makes conventional scanning risky or inadequate. DFT's Polar HQ film scanner enables safe digitization of delicate materials while minimizing manual preparation. The resulting high-quality files are suitable for restoration and long-term preservation.

This is an ongoing initiative with no fixed deadline. We support projects on a rolling basis throughout the year.
Applicants can expect to receive a response within 4 weeks. If the application is approved, we will contact the applicant to discuss all further details and arrangements.

2. Digitization

The submitted films are scanned at DFT’s facility using the Polar HQ, producing high-quality digital files within approximately 4–6 weeks. All original materials and the resulting digital files remain the property of the submitting party.

For approved projects, DFT works closely with the applicant to support the safe handling and shipment of the film material.

3. Delivery

Once digitization is complete, the digital files are delivered, and the original film are returned within 10 business days.
