First DFT POLAR HQ film scanner in China: China News Film invests in DFT film scanner

DFT is proud to announce the first installation of a DFT POLAR HQ film scanner in China. China News Film in Beijing took delivery of their new scanner in December 2024 and are looking forward to digitizing their archive stock to the highest quality. China´s first 8K film scanner put into use in the National Valuable Image Achieve Project

Recently, the first film scanner with a native 8K image sensor was officially put into use, and this achievement provides important technical guarantee for the National Valuable Image Achieve Project implemented by the Central News Group, which is of great significance for the digitization, preservation, research and dissemination of historical image with high image quality.

The National Valuable Image Achieve Project was included in the “14th National Five-Year Plan” in 2022, focusing on 4K digital restoration and preservation of films. After the Central News Film Group carefully investigated and organized expert to evaluate, the world leading product – German DFT POLAR HQ 8K scanner was selected. This equipment is used in different national archives centers and film libraries around the world. With its ultra-high resolution and accurate color reproduction capability, it can convert film images to multi-specification digital format without loss, guaranteed for historical image preservation. The application of the DFT POLAR HQ 8K scanner has helped the group to be at the forefront of film digitization in China, providing high-quality content and playing an exemplary role in the application of 8K digitization.

On December 9, the senior engineer from DFT came to Beijing to install and commission the scanner. The technicians from the Technical Department and the Media Assigment Department of the Central News Film Group received a week professional training. The DFT German engineer highly praised the professionalism and attitude of the technicians of Central News Film Group. He said that the deep heritage and rich experience of China News Film Group in the field of film has promoted the exchange of cultural digital preservation between China and Germany, and he hoped that China News Film Group would be a bridge of technical exchange with European film organizations.

Up to now, through the implementation of the National Valuable Image Achieve Project, the Central News Film Group has contructed a fast, efficient and high-quality film digitization production system of the whole process, which can realize scanning of 35mm and 16mm films with different resolutions of 2K-8K, and has significantly improved the film digitization productivity.
